United Arab Emirates
The topography of the United Arab Emirates is marked by a striking contrast between expansive, low-lying desert plains and rugged mountain highlands. Most of the country consists of arid basins and rolling sand dunes that form the northern fringes of the Rub' al Khali (Empty Quarter), blending into coastal salt flats known as sabkhas along the Persian Gulf, where elevations generally remain close to sea level. Inland, gravel plains and shifting dunes dominate the terrain, reinforcing the country’s predominantly flat and hyper-arid character. In sharp contrast, the eastern and northeastern regions are shaped by the dramatic rise of the Hajar Mountains, a craggy limestone range that ascends abruptly from the desert floor. Here, elevations increase steeply, culminating at Jebel Jais, the country’s highest peak at approximately 1,934 meters (6,345 feet). This powerful juxtaposition of near-sea-level deserts and sharply elevated mountain ridges creates a landscape defined by extreme variations in relief within a relatively compact territory.
